Ethan Chu, RCLS 7th grader, in Winston-Salem Symphony Peter Perret Youth Talent Search, district level, category: senior division. winner, advanced to final.

Ethan Chu, RCLS 7th grader, received a NC Federation of Music Club - district level, category: Musical Advanced I, 2nd place.  Advanced to state final in April.

Ethan Chu, RCLS 7th grader, received a Raleigh Piano Teacher Association Young Artist Competition, category: Young Artist II, 3rd place

04/24/06

Lian Marie Grissino,  a CSL student and second grader at Trinity Academy of Raleigh, received a Superior rating for her classical violin solos in both 2005 and 2006 from the National Federation of Music Junior Festivals held at Meredith College during the spring. Superior is the highest rating one can receive.


04/11/06

Kevin Chen,  RCLS 3rd grader, received a “Superior” rating for Piano Junior B on 2/25 in the district level of the NC Music Teachers Association (NCMTA) Contest-Festival. He also received a “Superior” rating for Junior B on 4/1 in the State Contest of NCMTA, and is invited to perform at the NCMTA Annual Conference in October at Elon University.

Kathleen Lan, a RCLS student, had participated the 2005 Talent Search for Mathematically and Verbally Talented Students search conduct  by Duke University Talent Identification Program. She was selected to receive the State Award.  The Duke TIP program had over 81,00 participants from over 16 states.


04/08/06

Ethan Chu, RCLS 5th grader, received a Superior rating for Piano Senior B on 2/25 at the district level, and again on 4/1 at the state level of the NC Music Teachers Association (NCMTA) Contest-Festival.  He is invited to perform at the 2006 NCMTA Conference to be held on October 12-15, 2006 at Elon University of Elon, NC.  On 3/4, Ethan was awarded the First Place Young Artist I in the Raleigh Piano Teachers Association Young Artist Audition, and performed on 3/12 in the Honors Recitals for the winners of this competition. On 3/18, Ethan also received a Superior rating and awarded the Fourth Place Very Difficult II at the NC Federation of Music Clubs Festival and Royalty Competition.

Congratulations to the following students who successfully auditioned for the All State Junior Eastern Region Orchestra.  Public concert is scheduled to be at Ashley High School in Wilmington on May 6.

Wesley Shang,  RCLS CV2 student, has performed violin and Yo-Yo at Harmonica Conert Jan 08, 2006.  The audience enjoyed his both talents and the Classical Voice of North Carolina gave him a wonderful review.   Wesley is the Concert Master at Ligon Silver Strings orchestra and made his Carnegie Hall debut last November.  He is also teaching Yo-Yo class at RCLS and serving on the TACAS Youth Group Advisory Board.

Yujane Chen,  RCLS CV2 student, won the Carolina Parent 2005 Children's Book Writing Contest in Carolina Parent's fifth annual Children's Book Writing Contest.  This contest was opened to children who entered grades K-8 in the fall of 2005 and had age categories of k-1, 2-3, 4-5, and 6-8.  Yujane's book, titled "I Can't, Said the Ant," won the third place of the Best Story in Grades 2-3.

Aimee Qin Murphy,  a third year student in Same Suen's CSL class, will be dancing with the Moscow Ballet in the "Nutcracker".  The performance will be held December 11, 2005 at the Dunn Center in Rocky Mount, NC.    


04/07/05

Ethan Chu,  RCLS 4th grader, received a Superior rating for Piano Senior A on 2/26 in the district level of the NC Music Teachers Association (NCMTA) Contest-Festival, and will go on to the state finals in April. On 3/5, Ethan was awarded the First Place Senior I in the  Raleigh Piano Teachers Association Young Artist Audition, and performed on 3/13 in the Honors Recitals for the winners of this competition. On 3/12, Ethan also received a Superior rating and awarded the Second Place Difficult 2 with a scholarship at the Federation Festival Competition, and will go to the state finals in April.

Asia Yu-Robinson, RCLS first grader, for being part of Underwood Elementary School's Blue Ribbon entry in the North Carolina State Fair art contest. Underwood (Asia and five other artists) won first place among All Elementary Schools for the second year in a row. No other school has won first place two years consecutively.

Ethan Chu, a 4th grader, earned a second place in Boys' 10 Singles of the Burlington Junior Novice Tennis Tournament on September 26. 


05/21/04

1. Carson Sandiford-Hoxie, RCLS CSL student, recently passed his first "test" and accomplished the first step towards becoming a "Formal" student in the Shaolin disciple lineage in both martial arts and philosophy.

2. Kevin Fan, RCLS 4th grader, recently earned a Tennis championship in the May competition at Greensboro Junior division.

05/12/04

1. Melanie Chin, RCLS Kindergarten and Dance3 teacher, was recognized in a recent NC State University news release. Graduating with a 4.0 GPA, double major, member of two honor societies, lead or participate in numerous community service activities AND Melanie still finds time 'every Saturday for four years' to teach kindergarten Chinese and traditional dance in RCLS!! "As a Chinese-American I cherish my heritage and I think it is important to instill this concept in younger children," she said. Melanie graduated from RCLS 4 years ago, is now graduating from NC State Univ, and will soon begin her pursuit toward a doctorate in Chemical Engineering in MIT this fall. We wish her all the best and hope her contribution would truly inspire others to cherish our heritage and volunteer to share their time and talents.

2. Adrienne Arthur, RCLS CSL student, was awarded a second prize in Sparring and third prize in Form Demonstration during the Durham Open Martial Art Tournament. She was in the category of Green Belt Tae Kwon Do in this competition.

1. Ethan Chu, RCLS 3rd grader, is awarded a "Superior" rating in the State competition of NC Music Teachers Association (NCMTA), and is invited to perform at the NCMTA Annual Conference in October. Ethan is also awarded a "Superior" rating at the National Piano Playing Auditions.

2. Aimee Qin Murphy, RCLS CSL student, is awarded both "Math Whiz Award" and the "Creative Writing Award" at Zebulon Elementary School where Aimee is attending as a 2nd grade.

04/02/04

1. Jenna Tie, RCLS CV2 student, was named one of the top twelve recipients in the Winner Circle of an International Baccalaureate writing contest at Broughton High School.

2. Kevin Chien, RCLS 6th grader, has won Ligon Middle School the championship title in the State MathCount competition, and placed 3rd for an individual honor in the Ligon team.


3/23/04 --- Musical:

1. Richard Lan, RCLS 8th grader, is awarded "Excellent" in Young Artists Audition Senior (Piano), "Superior" in Federation (Violin), and advanced to State Competition of NC Music Teachers Association in April (Piano).

2. Ethan Chu, RCLS 3rd grader, is awarded "Superior" rating at the Junior Level B in the NC Music Teachers Association (Piano), and advances to State competition of NC Music Teachers Association in April.

3. Kathleen Lan, RCLS 7th grader, is awarded "Excellent" in Young Artist Audition Intermediate II (Piano), and "Excellent" in NC MTA Intermediate II.

4. Christine Wei, RCLS 4th grader, is awarded 2nd place in the CAPTA (Cary-Apex Piano Teacher Association) Sonatina Competition, Level B.

3-23-04 --- Academic:

1. Kathleen Lan, RCLS 7th grader and Ligon 6th grader, has been honored nationally by her school and has been officially nominated as a USAA National Mathematics Award winner.

2. Kevin Chien, RCLS 6th grader and Ligon 7th grader, represented Ligon and won 2nd place in Regional MathCounts Team competition. Kevin is going to NC School of Science and Math on March 27 for the individual and team championship competition.
  • 03/16/2004: Wendy Lin, RCLS 9th grader, is awarded a ‘Superior’ rating in Young Artists Audition, Intermediate 1 (Piano).

  • 03/16/2004: Deborah Me, RCLS 9th grader, is awarded 2nd place in Young Artists Audition, Hazel Hardison Royalty – Princess division (Piano).

  • 03/16/2004: Joshua Chao, RCLS 8th grader, is awarded Honorable Mention in Young Artists Audition, Hazel Hardison Royalty – Prince division (Piano). Joshua was also selected to perform at the Triangle Youth Symphony Orchestra Honor Recital (cello).

  • 03/16/2004: Wesley Shang, RCLS 4th grader, is awarded 1st place in Young Artists Audition, Concerto 1 (Piano), and is advanced to compete at the State level of NC Music Teacher Association Festival in April (Piano). Wesley also received a ‘Superior’ rating in the Federation (violin).

  • 03/16/2004: In addition to the musical achievement, it is our great delight to congratulate Joshua Chao, the only student selected to represent Lufkin Middle school in the Mathcounts competition to be held in School of Math and Science next month.

  • 02/10/2004: Kathleen Lan, our 7th grade student, along with two other non-RCLS classmates participated in the international “ThinkQuest 2003” competition sponsored by Oracle Corporation. Their research on Wolf Live won the first place in North Carolina. The project can be viewed at http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0312520/.
  • 02/10/2004: Richard Lan, our 8th grade student, was awarded a trophy by successfully completing the 'Superior' placement in three consecutive years ( 2001, 2002, 2003) in the National Federation of Music competition.
  • 01/21/2004: The very first entry on the Brag Board goes to: Kevin Li, a student in our Youth Class, who received a perfect score in SAT last year! Congratulations!!
